What this is

A simulation with made-up numbers, built to show how a system can feel fair to each player while being lopsided in total. Play the creator, then switch to the platform and watch the same rules from the house's side.

The power law

In many attention markets, outcomes follow a heavy-tailed distribution, often described with Pareto or Zipf curves. Most items get almost nothing, and a few get almost everything.

Attention also compounds: an account that already has followers is shown to more people, so it gains more followers. Network scientists call this preferential attachment, and sociologists call a version of it the Matthew effect.

Intermittent variable rewards

B. F. Skinner found that rewards delivered on an unpredictable schedule produce the most persistent behavior. A slot machine works this way. A feed that sometimes shows you a spike of views works this way too. The rare win makes the long run of misses feel worth enduring.

The illusion of control

Ellen Langer showed that people act as if skill matters in situations decided by chance, especially when they put in effort and make choices. In the game, effort changes your odds by a fraction of a percentage point. Your Perceived Skill meter still climbs, because wins feel earned and losses feel like bad luck.

Fresh blood and survivorship bias

The platform does not need any single creator to succeed or stay. When one burns out, another signs up. We see the winners and rarely see the denominator of everyone who quit. The Success-story spotlight slider is that effect in one control.

Why the house wins

The platform owns the land. It sets the rules, owns the audience data, and can change the algorithm overnight. Creators supply the content for free and carry the risk. Creator labor is the platform's input cost, and the supply is replaceable.

Life lessons that need no AI (1 of 2)

• Process discipline helps only when the process builds something you own: a skill, a body of work, a mailing list, a reputation with real people.
• Treat uploads on rented ground like lottery tickets. Decide your budget of time and money up front, and stop when it is spent.
• Measure inputs you control, not outcomes the algorithm controls.
• Own a channel to your audience that no platform can switch off, such as email or a website.

Life lessons that need no AI (2 of 2)

• Spread income across more than one source, and keep a job or contract that pays while you experiment.
• Ask for the denominator. A success story with no count of failures is advertising.
• Sleep, health, and relationships are capital. Burning them down to feed a feed is a bad trade.
• Be wary of people who profit from your attempts, like course sellers, more than from your results.

The goal

You are a short-form video creator. Publish videos, build a following, and try not to burn out. There is no winning move, only how long you last and what you learn about the odds.

Switch between the two perspectives at any time with the A and B tabs, or press M. The Creator is the gambler. The Platform is the casino.

Creator: your meters

• Stamina drains with every action. Rest restores it but costs a day of rent.
• Mental Health falls after flops and rises after hits. Touch Grass restores it.
• Capital pays rent, $15 a day. Debt hurts your mental health.
• Perceived Skill is how good you feel about your work. It barely changes the odds.

If Stamina or Mental Health reaches zero, you burn out.

Making a video

• Write Script and Edit Video each add 50% to their bar. Publish needs at least 50% on both.
• Gear and courses raise Perceived Skill and nudge the odds slightly.
• The algorithm tests your video on a small audience. By default about 98% flatline at 0 to 9 views, and about 2% spike into the thousands or millions.
• At 1,000 followers your videos start to earn a little money.

The Platform

Press M or open the B tab. Watch creator bots sign up, grind and burn out while fresh ones take their place.

• Four sliders set algorithmic gravity, retention loops, the success-story spotlight and the creator revenue share.
• Your goal is the highest house profit per day.
• Watch the wealth bars: a tiny top group collects most creator payouts, and the house keeps almost everything else.

Autopilot and AI Autoplay

Autopilot (A) is a fixed loop: it rests when stamina is low, touches grass when mental health is low, and otherwise writes, edits and publishes.

AI Autoplay (G) is a built-in game AI that runs in your browser, with no API and no usage. As the Creator, it checks whether your meters could survive a flop before it starts a video, recovers when they could not, and spends spare cash on gear. On the Platform, it tests nearby slider settings on copies of the simulation and keeps the most profitable. In fullscreen, the cursor hides only while AI Autoplay runs.
